Did you know that Africa has the highest e-learning growth rates in the world? A recent report by Ambient Insight found that significant progress has been made over the last few years in the adoption of technology devices in African schools. So how does South Africa, and Gauteng in particular, stack up?
Gauteng’s Education Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Panyaza Lesufi has set the goal of using the power of technology to build a socially-cohesive education system. For example, implementing, smart, paperless classrooms will help ensure that all learners and teachers in Gauteng have access to innovative tools to enhance learning.
The Gauteng Department of Education conducted an information and communications technology (ICT) audit to identify what resources schools in the province have, and what they still require to support technology-led teaching and learning. Based on the findings of this audit, the department will come up with a fully-scoped business case to secure the necessary resources for the successful rollout of the province’s e-learning strategy.
Although progress has already been made in the implementation of e-learning strategies in Gauteng schools, there are a few issues for the department to consider, including:
- Connectivity and internet access
- Availability of local education content and curricula
- Training of teachers
